Moving in Vienna: A Practical Guide

Everything you need to know about moving apartments in Vienna. Costs, timelines, paperwork, and tips for a stress-free relocation.

Moving in Vienna is different

If you have moved apartments in other cities, Vienna will still surprise you. Between the Meldezettel registration, narrow Altbau stairwells, Parkpickerl zones, and end-of-month rush, there are a few things worth knowing before you start packing boxes.

This guide covers the practical side of moving in Vienna, from planning your timeline to finding the right movers.

Planning your move

Start four to six weeks ahead

A well-planned move is a stress-free move. Here is a rough timeline:

  • 6 weeks before: Give notice to your landlord (check your lease for the notice period, usually one to three months). Start decluttering.
  • 4 weeks before: Book movers. End-of-month dates fill up fast, so book early or consider a mid-month move for better availability and pricing.
  • 2 weeks before: Pack non-essentials. Notify your internet, electricity, and gas providers about the move.
  • 1 week before: Pack remaining items. Confirm the booking with your movers.
  • Moving day: Final walkthrough, hand over keys, register at the new address.

Costs to expect

Moving costs in Vienna vary significantly based on apartment size, floor level, and distance:

  • Studio or 1-bedroom: EUR 300 to EUR 600
  • 2-bedroom: EUR 500 to EUR 1,000
  • 3-bedroom or larger: EUR 800 to EUR 1,500+

These ranges include transport and basic loading/unloading. Packing services, furniture disassembly, and storage add to the total. Compare multiple offers on milles to find the best value.

The paperwork

Meldezettel (registration)

You are legally required to register your new address within three days of moving in. You will need:

  • A completed Meldezettel form (available at the Magistratisches Bezirksamt or online)
  • Your passport or ID
  • The landlord’s signature on the form confirming you live at the new address

Registration can be done in person at your local Bezirksamt or online through the Stadt Wien digital services.

Internet and utilities

Contact your providers as early as possible. In Vienna, common options include:

  • Internet: A1, Magenta, Drei
  • Electricity: Wien Energie (default supplier)
  • Gas: Wien Energie

Some providers allow you to transfer your contract to the new address. Others require a new contract, which can take a few days to activate.

Finding the right movers

Not all movers are the same. When comparing providers on milles, look for:

  • Clear pricing: A detailed quote that specifies what is included (transport, loading, stair surcharges)
  • Reviews from other Vienna customers: Check that previous customers were satisfied with punctuality and care
  • Insurance: Ask whether your belongings are covered during transport
  • Equipment: Confirm the movers have the right vehicle size and any specialty gear (piano boards, furniture blankets)

Tips for moving day

Access and parking

In many Vienna districts, you will need a temporary parking permit (Halteverbot) to reserve space for the moving truck. Your movers can usually arrange this, but it needs to be applied for at least two weeks in advance through the MA 46.

Altbau stairwells

If you are moving into or out of an older building, measure the stairwell and doorframes. Altbau stairways are often narrow and winding, which can affect how furniture is moved. Some items may need to go through windows or be disassembled first.

Protect common areas

Place protective coverings on floors and walls in shared stairways. This avoids damage disputes with the Hausverwaltung. Many professional movers bring their own protective materials.

After the move

  • Register your new address within three days (see above)
  • Update your address with your bank, employer, insurance, and the Finanzamt
  • Inspect the old apartment with your landlord for the Kaution (deposit) return
  • Set up your new space: If you have flat-pack furniture to assemble, an assembly pro can save you hours
